CURRENT Art Fair invites independent makers of art-related publications to apply for CURRENT Books 2018, a special CURRENT Art Fair event featuring artists’ book makers, zine makers, and small independent publishers of artist monographs and other book-based art objects. The inaugural event will see the return of CURRENT to its original neighborhood in Scott’s Addition, and will be held March 31, 2018 at Studio Two Three. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase books directly from artists and publishers based in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, and North Carolina that produced them.

Discover how to produce handmade paper with low-tech methods yielding high-end results. Learn how to prepare kozo (inner bark of a mulberry tree), beat fiber, pull sheets, and wrap basic sculptural forms. Experimenting with natural fibers, we will create sheets and work three-dimensionally.

Take a break from your computer and learn how to make a "zine". In this course, we will appropriate imagery from magazines, draw with markers, include text with typewriters, and finally photocopy pages to produce a zine! We will have some typewriters, markers, and magazines (to cut up) but feel free to bring your own imagery and typewriter!

Think outside the codex in this course that focuses on folds, flaps, and dimensional forms that can be combined in inventive ways to create alternative book structures. Creativity and experimentation are encouraged and no previous book making experience is necessary.




The event will be paired with special programming throughout the week, including live podcast recordings, a panel talk, and Studio Two Three workshops. The panel talk, moderated by Don Russell, will take place the evening of March 30th. Russell is the Executive Director of Provisions Library, a research center for arts and social change based out of George Mason University.

A CURRENT Books Preview Brunch ($5) will be held 11 am - noon on March 31 with pastries, mimosas, and the first opportunity to meet the exhibitors and purchase books. A cash bar benefiting Studio Two Three will run throughout the day during free general admission from noon - 8 pm and food trucks will be parked in the Studio Two Three Backyard. Visitors are invited to take a break in the reading room where they can be the live audience for recordings of Paper Cuts, a podcast focusing on the world of DIY publishing hosted by Christopher Kardambikis,  and LookSEE, a podcast dedicated to the visual arts in Richmond hosted by Paige Goodpasture. An after party will take place from 8 - 10 pm on site at Studio Two Three.

CURRENT Books is based in Richmond, VA, a city with a robust art scene including institutions such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 1708 Gallery, the forthcoming VCU Institute for Contemporary Art, the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, and thriving commercial and non-profit gallery spaces. In 2015, Richmond was named as the “Most Artistic Mid-Sized City in America” by, and was also named a top destination by Frommer in 2014. CURRENT Books will take place in of Scott’s Addition, a neighborhood of creatives, makers, and artists as well as a vibrant array of craft breweries, distilleries, and restaurants.
