FOR AS LONG AS SUCH IMAGES ARE NEEDED

Studio Two Three and the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU Partner on Artist Micro-Residencies and Exhibition

In this time of social isolation, art and culture give us an expansive means to communicate, empathize and flourish. From the functional to the decorative, the presence of art in our civic landscape has a measurable impact on our health and wellbeing. At Studio Two Three, our mission is simple yet ambitious: we empower artists to make art and make change. It is our fundamental belief that artists create the conditions for a healthy and vibrant society.

Studio Two Three is closed to the public as a result of COVID-19; however, now more than ever, we are committed to supporting artists and amplifying their critical role in providing healing, comfort and inspiration for our communities. We are proud to be partnering with the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University (ICA) in this effort.

Since its opening in 2018, the ICA has been committed to providing an open forum for dialogue and collaboration. Together, S23 and the ICA will host a series of five micro-residencies, each lasting for seven days. During this time, participating artists will have 24/7 access to our printmaking studio and tools.

Due to COVID-19 closures, our communal studio is currently unused. Artists will be provided with a safe, socially distant space to create a series of responsive works. S23 will provide resident artists with technical support and resources to produce work in screen printing, letterpress, risography, monoprint, and black-and-white darkroom photography.

At the conclusion of each residency, completed artist works will be installed and exhibited in the windows of the ICA building at Broad and Belvidere in downtown Richmond. Once the exhibition has closed, selections from the produced artworks and installation materials will be archived at by The Valentine Museum for future exhibition and reference.

Stay tuned for an announcement on our participating resident artists and follow along on our social media for studio visits and works in progress.
