Create. Work. Learn. Together.
We provide established and aspiring artists with studio space, equipment, education, and open doors. We offer 24/7 access to a print shop, darkroom, digital lab, communal workspace, and individual studios We are professionals, amateurs, teachers and students.
S23 is an energizing incubator for the current generation and the next one, keeping our creative community robust and evolving, producing the goods and services that move through our city’s galleries, businesses, schools, festivals, homes, and life.
WE MAKE [ART] WORK THROUGH STUDIO ACCESS, EDUCATION, AND EXHIBITIONS.
Richmond is a great city, and great cities depend on great art.
Artists need to succeed personally and professionally for great art to thrive.
Making money from making art is a good thing, and commerce is not a dirty word. You should love what you make, and make money making what you love. We are here to give artists the tools they need to succeed, and our city the creative work it deserves.
Constant striving, curiosity, learning and creating are critical to making great work. That’s why we give artists 24/7 access to the studio and each other. It’s why our classes are affordable, so that anyone with a desire can learn. It’s why we share ideas, open our doors, and welcome you in.
You will succeed, but not right away. Success takes failure. We get our hands inky, make mistakes, question, challenge, improve, and eventually succeed. We are a place for experimentation, for the challenge of small failures and the triumph of creative success.
We are all better for working together. Studio Two Three is a safe, accessible place where you can work, meet other creators, and build community ties. We work within the studio and within the community, creating single pieces and epic collaborations, because we thrive when our community is thriving.
Studio members have 24/7 access to the studio. We have facilities for etching, relief, lithography, and screen printing, digital printing, and a black and white darkroom. Studio Members have access to all printmaking equipment, conference and lounge spaces, a kitchenette, wireless internet, darkroom, and a community of fellow artists and craftspeople. For more information visit the Use the Studio page.
Our workshops are affordable and welcoming to learners of all levels. Topics range from Super 8mm filmmaking to photolitho, black and white photography to intaglio, zine-making to experimental screen printing. Our instructors are established artists who bring their knowledge, expertise, and innovative approaches to the classroom. We also offer Field Trips & Tours for schools and nonprofits. Our interns learn critical hands-on experience and resume-building skills by working in all aspects of S23’s operations, including gallery administration and installation, event planning, educational programming, fundraising and community outreach, and nonprofit administration. Our internships develop artistic and administrative skills in the next generation of Richmond artists. For more information visit the Internships Page.
Our Print Spectaculars are designed to shock and amaze. Generally, they involve us printing giant woodcuts with a steamroller, but may also involve live t-shirt printing, roller-skate printing, and soon, a PrintMobile fashioned from an ice cream truck.
