ARTIST RESIDENCY AT STUDIO TWO THREE

As artists, we know that providing access to the arts must extend beyond studio space & tools, therefore our residency programs accommodate 24/7 studio access, 1-to-1 artist mentorship, access to healthcare & WIC enrollment & free educational workshops on business and artistic technique.

Residency applications will be rated based upon artistic quality and fit for Studio Two Three’s offerings & equipment. Preference will be given to artists facing challenging or constraining financial circumstances. Accepted artist residents are expected to:

  • Work in a self-guided manner when in the studio

  • Consent to Studio Two Three sharing quotes, video and images of their work for use in program materials & publicity

  • Provide ongoing feedback on how we can improve the residency program

  • Sign an Artist Member License Agreement outlining rules and expectations of studio

  • Contribute a print to Studio Two Three for our archive and/or fundraising purposes

To be considered for a residency, please select a residency and complete the corresponding application form.

RESIDENCY PROGRAMS

  • MAKE ART WORK

Richmond and Tri-Cities artists are invited to submit an application for our third annual Make Art Work residency–– a 3 month in-person residency program that provides 24/7 studio membership, pre-paid transportation (as needed), one-on-one technical support from artist mentors, practical business resources, and connection to a creative community of professional artists. The residency is free of charge for accepted artists.

This program is specifically intended for low wealth artists–– which we define as artists experiencing ongoing financial hardship that prevents them from participating in residency programs, classes for professional and/or artistic development and studio membership.

*We will not require documentation of your financial position.
Please respect this opportunity and only apply if this qualification applies to you.

  • VISITING ARTISTS

This program provides artists with access to Studio Two Three to create work in screen printing, letterpress, risography, monoprinting, and black and white photography.

Residents can choose between 1-week, 2-week, 3-week and one-month sessions. Artists should plan on providing their own ink, paper, emulsion, and plates. Artists outside of Richmond are encouraged to apply, but must make their own arrangements for housing during their residency.

This is a self-directed residency for artists experienced in print media. Artists looking for technical support can schedule one-on-one workshops with Studio Two Three instructors at a rate of $30/hour.

  • Colossus Press | Richmond Virginia | Aimee Joyaux

    COLOSSUS PRESS

Colossus Press is an in-house artist book press and associated residency program.

Colossus focuses on progressive works by artists and authors working in fiction and non-fiction. The press utilizes our risograph equipment, letterpress, screen printing and book binding equipment to create small runs of limited edition artist books.

We work with Colossus Press artists in a residency format to design, print & bind their books for distribution.

  • COMMUNITY STUDIO

The Community Studio program provides early-career artists with a collaborative group experience with free biweekly classes on printmaking techniques (risography, bookbinding, screen-printing, letterpress). Artists are supported in the production of a new body of work utilizing a range of print media.

Artists for the Community Studio program are selected from Make Art Work applicants who show strong potential but need technical assistance to learn how to use the equipment and tools available at the studio. We contact potential participants to notify them of this opportunity.

Our Artist Residency programs are made possible with support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Richmond CultureWorks, and generous individual donors.

Please email kate@studiotwothree.org if you’d like to support this programming.
