Today we’re going to share some updates on unemployment.

What is Unemployment Insurance?

Unemployment insurance is provided to those who lose their job through no fault of their own. This is monetary compensation provided by your state. Amount of benefits and length of time benefits are available are determined by laws in your state.

How Do I Apply?

To apply, search “your state name” unemployment in Google, and make sure the site ends with “.gov”. If you are in Virginia, you can apply at vec.virginia.gov. You will need your social security number, employer name, address, and number, as well as a method of payment. If you are choosing direct deposit, you need your routing number and account number. You MUST refile your claim weekly (more on that later).

How Much Would I Receive?

Unemployment benefits range depending on what percentage of your previous salary you are eligible for. Now, because of COVID-19 and the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act, these benefits include an additional $600/week for up to 6 months.

How Long Do Benefits Last?

State unemployment benefits have extended an additional 13 weeks beyond what they currently provide. This means you can receive benefits for up to 39 weeks. All unemployed workers are to receive an extra $600 a week for up to 6 months until December 31, 2020.

Weekly Filing

Remember to refile your claim weekly to continue receiving benefits. Most states have waives the weekly job search requirement. It is helpful to pick the same day each week to file.

When Do I Receive Benefits?

Most states have waived the one week waiting period after unemployment. You can apply as soon as you are out of work. States have also begun distributing the weekly $600.

Eligibility

Usually, you are able to receive benefits if you are unemployed through no fault of your own, your working conditions or terms changed, or you have child-care issues due to your job. The CARES Act now allows those who are self employed, part-time workers, or those who had just stated a new job to be eligible for benefits.

Am I Eligible If…

I quit my job as an essential worker because I felt unsafe? I have no children, nor caring for an ill loved one.

Unfortunately, you would not be able to qualify. However, if you are immunocompromised and it is recommended by a medical professional that you should stay home, or if you were medically diagnosed with COVID-19 and unable to return to work, you would be eligible.

I am working from home but need to take care of my children who are out of school.

Yes, you can get unemployment benefits as a primary caregiver of a child who is home due to COVID-19.
