#RentRelief

Supporting our artist community is at the heart of what we do. Each day we’re going to be sharing some important tools, opportunities, and resources for artists on our blog. Follow along and reach out if you need additional support.

Today we’re going to talk about your options for rent and bill relief.

If you have lost your job and are worried about making rent, here is what you need to know:

The CARES Act has banned evictions for around 120 days. During the 120 day eviction moratorium, your landlord may not charge you late fees, penalties, or other charges for paying your rent late. There has been a call for national rental assistance, but that has yet to emerge.

TALK TO YOUR LANDLORD ASAP

Start a conversation with your landlord about what is realistic for you. It is useful to provide proof of loss of income so they cannot make unrealistic demands. Ask for payment plans via email so you have communication in writing.

CHECK FOR STATE ASSISTANCE

Check local and state government websites for information about COVID-19 related eviction moratoriums, rent forbearance or rent assistance.

If your property is financed by Fannie Mae, there are disaster relief resources available to you.

ORGANIZE WITH FELLOW TENANTS

If you are unable to pay or want to support others who can’t, talk to your neighbors. @Richmondstrike can help walk you through what has already been happening in your area and connect you with a tenant group. If you are having trouble starting a conversation with your landlord, they have a template you can look through.
