An Open Letter to Arts & Culture Leaders and Supporters: Now is the Time to Act
We now stand on the cusp of another arts recession. The decisions we make today will be felt in our communities for several generations to come. Regardless of the trajectory of COVID-19, its impact on our nation is already evident. Without immediate and decisive intervention, our rural communities and smaller cities will be left without a crucial resource for building their future. And we certainly cannot leave the state of our field to the whims of an administration who regularly proposes federal divestment from the arts.

Studio Two Three has spent the last ten years investing deeply in the future of Richmond. Located in the heart of the Scott’s Addition district, we support and train artists, provide space for new local businesses, and offer space for family and community events. Working closely with artists and arts organizations across the region, our work builds the unique cultural identity of our city, brings people together in healthy and creative ways, and makes it possible for everyone in our neighborhoods to participate and belong. In all sorts of ways, arts and culture make our communities thrive.
Richmond Public Schools Advocacy
We are proud to partner with Richmond Public Schools (RPS) to advocate on behalf of RPS and Richmond students. We hosted RPS’ first Advocacy Summit, in which community members screen printed t-shirts and posters with new RPS advocacy graphics and distributed them to their schools and communities. We also worked with teachers and advocates to prepare signs and shirts ahead of the “Fund Our Future” rally, calling on the General Assembly to set aside more funding in the budget for schools. We are in continuing dialogue to support RPS’ students summer learning through public art tours.
Richmond Independent Zine Library at Studio Two Three
Studio Two Three is now home to the Richmond Independent Zine Library (RIZL)! Celina Williams and Dustin Fenton started RIZL in 2016, to share their personal zine collections, collect and share zines specifically for the library, and develop a space for a growing zine community in Richmond, Virginia.
Women’s March Poster Printing
In January of 2017, in a climate of uncertainty and fear, we had dozens of requests for workshops to make t-shirts, posters, banners and other ephemera for the Women’s March in Washington DC. In the span of one week, over 500 people come to Studio Two Three to make artwork expressing their beliefs and advocating for policies they cared about.
